Dr. Peter Barnett, DMD
History
Although trained as both a general and cosmetic dentist, Dr. Barnett’s philosophy is that all dentistry is cosmetic dentistry. He strives to give his patients the best treatments to maintain healthy, functional mouths, while also recognizing his patients’ desires to improve their smiles.
Dr. Barnett assesses each patient’s needs through a comprehensive examination; he spends one-on-one time listening to each patient so that he can understand their concerns and recommend the best solution. He always goes the extra step to make sure the patient is comfortable with the approach and lets them know they are in control of the process.
Dr. Barnett takes extra measures to ensure that his patients have a visual and verbal understanding of what their completed dental work will look like. But, as importantly, he makes sure the patient’s bite (the way the teeth fit together) is also correct. As a result, his skilled and precise methods translate into a functional and beautiful outcome for the patient.
Additionally, Dr. Barnett focuses on the treatment of Temporomandibular Joint disorders (TMJ). TMJ affects the jaw joints and muscle nerve systems that allow the jaw to function. Dr. Barnett offers TMJ therapy, which provides relief from muscle and joint pain and seeks to curb the causes of the disorder.
Another area of emphasis for Dr. Barnett is periodontal disease, which can greatly impact the overall health of your mouth and entire body. Dr. Barnett offers several conservative treatments (antibiotic treatments and specialized cleaning) as well as periodontal surgery for severe cases.
Background
Born and raised in New York City, Dr. Peter Barnett spent many hours with his grandparents who were both dentists. Ultimately, he went to the same dental school, the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, graduating in 1977. He completed his residency at Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, New York. He is licensed to practice in five states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas and New Mexico. Dr. Barnett has his MBA in Healthcare Management from the Wharton School of Business.
Dr. Barnett has spent the last 30 years in dental and health care management. He is a recognized leader in the dental insurance industry, as well as a respected businessman owning and managing practices for many years in the northeast and now in Texas. He is a published author of numerous articles on dentistry and health care, has served as a frequent lecturer at dental schools and elsewhere, and maintains membership in the Texas Dental Association and the American Dental Association.
In addition, he also served on the board of CollaGenex from 1997 to 2008, a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on developing and marketing innovative branded products to the dental and dermatology markets, including Periostat, the first and only systemic pharmaceutical to treat periodontal disease. Through out his tenure at Collagenex he served and chaired on several committees.
In 2003, Dr. Barnett opened Star Ranch Dental in Plano, Texas. He is married to Susan Clay and has three grown daughters. In his spare time, he enjoys reading a good spy novel, traveling and spending time with his family.
