Porcelain Crowns and Tooth Caps
When a tooth can not be fixed with a simple filling due to a fracture or depth of a cavity, you will likely need to have a crown (or cap) placed. Here at Star Ranch Dental we primarily use porcelain crowns instead of gold or porcelain fused to metal. (Although, after discussing with the patient, we will use gold crowns – as they are the best choice for the very back teeth, but not always the patient’s preference.)
Porcelain crowns allow the patient to keep the look of their natural tooth color. Sometimes, altough rarely, porcelain fused to metal or gold crowns may be the right choice. We will always assess your personal situation in order to give you the best care for YOU. Gold crowns are however noticeable in a patients mouth and porcelain fused to metal crowns can wear, and at some point the porcelain can fracture or wear off leaving metal showing in the patient’s mouth. In many cases, the metal from a porcelain fused to metal crown can be seen at the gum line. Porcelain crowns are made to match the original shape, color, and size of your natural teeth – giving you a result that will keep you smiling!
Having a porcelain crown placed is a two visit procedure for the patient. Your first visit Dr. Barnett will prep the tooth and take some impressions to send to the lab that will create your crown. You will leave the office with a temporary tooth made from a thin, removable plastic. In about two weeks we will have you come back for a quick, 30 minute visit. Dr. Barnett will remove the temporary and seat the permanent crown.
Dr. Barnett will always recommend what you personally need in your situation, presenting the best results with porcelain crowns for our patients’ individual smiles! Star Ranch Dental in Plano, TX offers porcelain crowns (tooth caps) to patients in Plano, Frisco, and all of North Dallas.
